Detailed Variety Characteristics
Chandler walnut is originated from the University of California and is the most demanded and widely planted commercial walnut variety across the world. The nut is oval, medium-to-large, with a smooth and thin shell that makes manual cracking and industrial processing exceptionally efficient. The kernels separate easily into full halves (butterfly cut) with minimum breakage.
Because Chandler leafs out approximately 15 to 20 days later than traditional local varieties, it avoids damaging early spring frosts in altitudes up to 1,100 meters. Over 85% of lateral buds produce fruit clusters, leading to rapid precocity (bearing fruit within 2-3 years) and outstanding mature yields. Highly resistant to common walnut blight and diseases. The recommended and essential pollinizer is Franquette.
